The cruise season is lasting increasingly longer as more ships visit Northern Norway to experience the Northern Lights and winter. This is a major contributor to the good growth in a number of destinations in the region.
Calls in 2015 sold out in record time: CEO Andreas Storl in European Cruise Service AS can inform that Spanish Pullmantur, with the cruise ship MS Empress and its two turnarounds in Lakselv – and three in Bodø – in June 2015, sold out in record time.
Northern Norway and Svalbard is the realm of the Midnight Sun. As there is daylight around the clock in summer, it is possible to exploit the capacity of the ports in a completely different way than is currently the case.
13 Aug Turnaround port casting off
NorthCape Turnaroundport AS has ordered a Seawalk XT scheduled for delivery in May 2015. Four weeks later MS Empress will sail into the Porsangerfjord and become the first cruise ship to call at the North Cape Turnaround Port. This will also be the largest turnaround operation ever performed so far north.
Turnaround operations are predicted to be the future of cruise traffic to Northern Norway and Spitsbergen. There is a demand from passengers for shorter cruises and the cruise lines wish to reduce fuel consumption and offer new itineraries and destinations. This is a win-win situation.
