Cruise Northern Norway & Svalbard

1 A GLACIER WALK ON SVARTISEN GLACIER

Top Image: 2051

Svartisen is Norway’s second largest glacier, covering 370 square kilometres of land! At its lowest point it is only 20 metres above sea level, making it the lowest lying glacier on the European mainland. This makes it easily accessible for glacier hikes and walks. The highest point of the glacier is 1594 metres above sea level; the branch of the glacier called Engenbreen is 450 metres deep at its thickest point. We depart by bus from Bodø cruise ship harbour. Guides will provide information during the bus trip. The coastal road is a beautiful drive. A taxi boat will bring you from Holand over Holandsfjord to Engen. This is when we’ll first see Svartisen in the distance. Equipment and safety instructions on how to approach the glacier will be given. A packed lunch and warm beverages will be offered to those heading out onto the ice. Lunch will be available at the Brestua restaurant for those who are just content to view the glacier.
