Alta lies at the head of the Altafjord and is situated in a part of Norway known as Finnmark. Your tour starts with a short sightseeing tour of Alta before travelling alongside the River Altaelva, one of the best salmon rivers in Norway. This river runs through one of the largest canyons in Europe, as it travels from the high plateau of Finnmarksvidda down to the Altafjord. Continuing on through Repvåg you will then enter the North Cape Tunnel to the island of MagerØya, home to the North Cape, Europe’s most northerly point. The tunnel was built between 1993 and 1999 and at 700 feet below sea level and 4 ¼ miles long, was the longest and deepest sea tunnel at that time. Arriving on the island, pass through Honningsvåg, the ‘capital’ of MagerØya and across the unique ‘lunar’ landscape of the island, with its grazing reindeer and dramatic terrain, to North Cape. Named by the 16th century Richard Chancellor as he sought the Northeast passage, this sheer cliff rises 1,010 foot above the Arctic Ocean. Visit the North Cape Hall and enjoy the natural panorama before visiting the shops, chapel and cinema all within the North Cape hall. After this we return to Honningsvåg where we will get lunch, before starting the journey back to your ship.Destination: 169
